Additionally, platforms have demystified mental health issues, encouraging young people to seek professional help and reducing the stigma that previous generations faced in silence.

However, the harms substantially outweigh these benefits. The most insidious effect is the culture of comparison that social media fosters. Adolescents are bombarded with carefully curated images of their peers' lives — filtered, edited, and selected to present an idealised reality. Studies have consistently linked this exposure to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia among teenagers. Furthermore, the algorithmic design of these platforms exploits developmental vulnerabilities: the dopamine-driven feedback loops of likes and notifications are particularly potent for adolescent brains, leading to addictive usage patterns and chronic sleep deprivation. Cyberbullying, too, has been amplified exponentially, as the anonymity and reach of social media allow harassment to follow victims into their homes, leaving no safe refuge.

In conclusion, while social media is not without merit for young people, its negative impact on mental health is significant and well-documented. Addressing this crisis will require not only parental supervision and digital literacy education, but also regulatory action to hold platforms accountable for their design choices.
