Nevertheless, the environmental toll of inaction far outweighs these economic concerns. Each year, approximately eleven million tonnes of plastic enter the oceans, breaking down into microplastics that have been detected in human blood, placental tissue, and breast milk. The health implications are profound and still unfolding. Moreover, the economic argument cuts both ways: the cost of cleaning up plastic pollution, treating related illnesses, and managing overflowing landfills already runs into billions annually. A phased global ban, coupled with investment in alternative materials and circular-economy infrastructure, would stimulate innovation and create new employment sectors. Countries such as Rwanda and Kenya have demonstrated that decisive action is feasible — Rwanda's capital, Kigali, is now among the cleanest cities in Africa precisely because of its stringent plastic bans.
