The widespread adoption of remote work has prompted speculation about the future of urban centres. Some commentators argue that the exodus of office workers will spell the decline of major cities. However, I largely disagree with this prediction, as cities possess inherent advantages that remote work cannot negate. It is true that remote work has already reshaped urban landscapes. Commercial vacancy rates have surged in cities like San Francisco and London, where empty office buildings have depressed local economies that depended on foot traffic from office workers. Some professionals have indeed relocated to smaller towns or rural areas, attracted by lower living costs and more space. This shift has prompted predictions that the concentration of economic activity in major cities — a pattern that has defined civilisation for centuries — is finally reversing. Nevertheless, the factors that make cities thrive extend far beyond office attendance. Cities are fundamentally agglomeration economies: they concentrate talent, capital, and infrastructure in ways that virtual interactions cannot replicate. Innovation still depends on serendipitous encounters — the chance meeting at a conference, the corridor conversation that sparks a collaboration — and these are uniquely urban phenomena. Moreover, cities offer cultural amenities, specialised healthcare, and educational institutions that remote work cannot deliver over a video call. Young professionals, in particular, continue to gravitate toward cities for social and professional networking opportunities. Rather than declining, cities are likely to adapt: repurposing office spaces for residential use, investing in public infrastructure, and attracting residents who value walkable, vibrant communities over suburban isolation. In conclusion, while remote work will certainly transform how cities function, predictions of their decline are greatly exaggerated. Cities have survived far greater disruptions throughout history, and their core advantages — density, diversity, and dynamism — remain as relevant as ever.
